Project Management – Corium Modification Studies

Project Management – Corium Modification Studies

To extend the operational lifespan of France’s nuclear power plants (CNPE) beyond 40 years, EDF aims to reinforce the containment of reactor buildings (RB) in the event of a severe accident involving core meltdown. In this context, the Gravelines Nuclear Power Plant called on ADVANCE Engineering for the preparation, execution, and management of the modification works.

Description

CONTEXT

As part of extending the operating life of CNPEs beyond 40 years, EDF is strengthening the containment of reactor buildings (RB) to ensure confinement in the event of a severe accident with reactor core meltdown. The modifications aim to stabilise the corium layer under water after its spread across the reactor building floor by:

  • Ensuring watertightness against both water and corium before re-cleaning the areas required for corium spreading.

  • Sealing the reactor pit and the reactor core instrumentation room

  • Enabling the dry re-cleaning of corium once spread, through a passive system connecting the spreading area to the sump water.

MAIN MISSIONS

  • Preparation and monitoring of Corium modification works.

  • Execution of reactive technical assessments.

  • Project scheduling management – organisation of treatment campaigns and drafting of the associated specifications.

  • Budget monitoring for all related activities.

  • Implementation of complementary environmental and compliance works.

  • Execution of civil engineering services upon request from other departments.
